Microsoft relied on Office 365 and other products to rack up almost $10 billion (roughly Rs. 66,697 crores) in commercial cloud revenue for the fiscal year that ended June 30, and is adding services to draw in more customers.

"Microsoft is trying to get more airtime with customers that might want something to augment their existing investment in Office 365," Thompson said. "What we have started to see is a bunch of companies trying to attack the enterprise versions of WhatsApp and consumer messaging." IDC hasn't published a market size or forecast for the space, which it calls workplace application messaging.

A preview of the service, dubbed Microsoft Teams, is available now for Office 365 commercial customers in some versions. It will be generally available in the first quarter and will be included in all Office 365 Enterprise and small business versions.

Microsoft's product allows teams to add what it's calling Tabs, to quickly link to frequently used files and applications. These tabs can relate to Microsoft products like the OneNote note-taking program or to outside products -- the company said it's adding support for Zendesk and Asana soon. Teams can also bring in notifications from services like Twitter and GitHub. Like Slack, it also supports the usage of bots -- programs that chat with users to automate tasks.

It's not Microsoft's first foray into this area - the company paid $1.2 billion in 2012 to buy Yammer Inc., but hasn't been able to build up the kind of usage as Slack and HipChat. Slack raised $200 million at a valuation of $3.8 billion in April. The startup, which introduced its product in 2013, said it reached annualized revenue of $100 million over the summer and surpassed 1.25 million paid users. HipChat was founded in 2010 and acquired by Atlassian two years later. That company declined to break out specific numbers for the product.

Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft considered acquiring Slack, but the discussions never got serious enough to involve Nadella or the company's board, and it opted instead to build its own similar software, said two people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named because the process wasn't public. TechCrunch reported Microsoft's potential interest in Slack in March.

In a very tongue-in-cheek acknowledgment of the competition, Slack took out a full-page ad in the New York Times Wednesday and posted a copy on its web site welcoming Microsoft to the field and noting that "all this is harder than it looks."

Using Deadline’s farm statistic tools to evaluate 2015 render times, Greenwalt was able to break down every render hour used by plug-in type, filtering down to NUKE and making note of the total render time. Purchasing NUKE by the hour has not only proven to be more cost-effective, but also saved Straightface’s team’s time. Rather than waiting for a finite number of render nodes to complete a job, the studio can burst render across its 21-node render farm, spreading the job out and completing tasks more quickly. Composites that used to take upwards of 50 hours to render can now be sent off based on morning feedback and reviewed the same day.

Considering the scope and timeline of Straightface’s projects often fluctuate, on demand NUKE licensing has also relieved some of the pressure in anticipating needs throughout the year. “The NUKE render capacity that we need varies per project; one day we may not need to use NUKE at all, but the next we may need it extensively. GM wants to use artificial intelligence to sell you stuff while driving


General Motors has partnered with IBM to add the latter's artificial intelligence smarts to its cars. IBM's Watson will be used to augment GM's OnStar service, which currently offers features like vehicle tracking and turn-by-turn navigation for a monthly subscription fee.

The upgraded OnStar Go, though, seems to be more about advertising than anything else. GM says the main use will be to let drivers "connect and interact with their favorite brands," with Watson crunching data on users habits to deliver personalized services. Depending on your outlook, some of these services could be genuinely useful. Or, they could be just another unnecessary and intrusive attempt to sell you things. This time, though, it's happening in your car.

Details on these services are pretty thin at the moment, but GM has outlined a number of potential uses, including:

  • Curating "personalized experiences" on iHeartRadio based on drivers' listening habits
  • Directing drivers to nearby Exxon and Mobil fuel stations when their car is running low on gas
  • Making in-car payments using Mastercard's Masterpass system

As mentioned above, details on these features are few and far between, but even these brief descriptions raises some questions. For example, will the car direct you only to Exxon and Mobile fuel stations when you're running low on gas? What if other fuel stations are cheaper or nearer? The Wall Street Journal notes that GM and IBM will share revenue generated by these advertising tie-ins, which makes it seem doubly unfair to drivers who are already paying for an OnStar subscription to then get advertised to in a deal that might actually be detrimental to them (by directing them to a far away fuel station) but that pays out for GM.

WHO REALLY BENEFITS FROM THESE SYSTEMS?


Other features outlined by GM seem more about competing with the digital assistants offered by companies like Amazon and Google. These assistants are supposed to learn about your habits in order to make timely suggestions, like, leaving work 20 minutes early to avoid traffic. GM suggests that the AI-infused OnStar Go might be able to make similar interventions; for example, reminding a "working father to pick up diapers and formula at the pharmacy a few miles before his exit, so he won’t have to leave the house again once he gets home."

That certainly sounds useful in theory, but there's no explanation of where GM is getting this data from. Would drivers have to explain that they have children during a set-up process? And how would OnStar Go know when they're running low on diapers? Does it have access to some to-do list?

In fairness to GM, this is all opt-in, and the company describes these features only as "potential uses" — suggesting it's not exactly thought through what implementing them would mean. But if it hasn't fully developed these ideas, it probably shouldn't be touting them as benefits. At any rate, GM says it wants to make OnStar Go available in two million cars by the end of 2017.
